Aadi Kavi Nannayya

Full Name:           Nannaya Bhattaraka
Place of Birth:      Rajahmundry (Rajamahendravaram)
Year of Birth:       11th Century AD
Titles (Birudulu): Aadi Kavi, Shabda Sasanudu and Vaganu Sasanudu
Notable works:
Nannayya is the first known telugu author. He is the one who briught the language an identity among many dravidian languages. Telugu is known to be the sweetest languages of all, much of this should go to the initial steps of Nannayya. He gave the language's grammar in the form of his notable writing "Andhra sabda chintamani".

Aadi Kavi Nannayya is the first of the Kavitrayam who performed the arduous task of translation of the great epic Mahabharata into Telugu language. The trinity consists of Nannayya, Tikkana and Yerrapragada. These three at different times translated the great epic Mahabharata into Telugu. Nannaya translated 2 parvas  Aadi, Sabha and half of Aranya of Mahabharata from Sanskrit to Telugu.

Controversy of Telugu Existance:
Ancient status (Classiscal) for Telugu language denied until 2011. Major reason for this is Nannaya lived during 11th century and he is called the Aadi Kavi (First poet) and hence Telugu should be only 1000+ years old. But the archaeological excavations at Kotilingala and other places revealing coins on whhich telugu has been written are more than 2,200 years old, eventually helped Telugu in attaining Classical status.
